Occasionally, DSE organizes an expedition to a foreign country. The
main mission of an expedition is always related to astronomy or
astronautics, however, there will also be time to be an ordinary
tourist.
Some expeditions have a particular astronomical or
astronautical event as the main motivation, e.g. a solar eclipse, a
bright comet or a rocket launch. Other expeditions are aimed at
visiting great astronomical observatories or space centres.
Examples of earlier expeditions:
- A big expedisjon went to Egypt in 2006 to experience
the total solar eclipse March 29th this year. 19 persons participated.
- Our most popular expedition went to
Austria in
August 1999, connected to the total eclipse in middle Europe. Visits
to interesting places on the road were made, and the 40 participants were
very satisfied with the expedition.
- Expedition to Puimichel
in 1995, the largest amateur telescope in Europe. The 1 meter
telescope is located at an observatory with several telescopes built
by amateurs in Southern France. The expedition included visits to two
professional French observatories and the Riviera Coast.
- Voyager Space Probe Expedition
to USA in 1989. This expedition was arranged together with the
Norwegian Astronautical Society there the main destination was NASA's
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) while Voyager 2 passed by Neptune and
its moons. In addition, we visited Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space
Center, Orange County Observers Observatory, Rockwell International,
University of Arizona's Telescope Mirror Laboratory and Kitt Peak
National Observatory.
- Comet Halley Expedition
to the Canary Islands in 1986 to see the comet as it passes by the
Earth. In addition to spectacular observation nights, three islands,
several professional observatories and a lot of tourist attractions
were visited.
