There are long-term plans for building a next-generation telescope at NOVA. It will be a very large, high-tech telescope placed within a relatively small dome. The mirror diameter will be of about 1 meter, and the mounting will probably be of the alt-azimuth type. The telescope will be available for both on-site use, remote control and robotic operations. In robot mode, the telescope will work on its own without human intervention while running an observational programme that has been downloaded to the telescope through Internet.

The NGT group develops plans and technical solutions for the next generation telescope. The group is composed of professional specialists within various branches, like electronics, computer controlled systems, telescope design, image processing and astrophysics. The technical solutions for the NGT is tested on the Phoenix telescope at NOVA. Hence, as a spinoff from the project, the Phoenix telescope will also become a robotic telescope available to DSE members on Internet within some years.
